As I have already told, I am a Deshpande Foundation fellow. We had a Impact study module of studying the impact of different projects implemented by different NGOs. I with my co-fellow had been for the impact study on Rice intensification in Shiggoan taluk of Haveri district. The project is being implemented by SRIJAN. We nearly had six days study.
The impact was not seen as the project is too young to study the impact and it needs at least three years to have an impact.
Most of the farmers are small and marginal, who have taken up SRI method in 5-10 guntas under the project. Due to late rains the planting was delayed this year. All fields are almost 25-45 kms away from Shiggoan. So it was a very hard time for us. As you know SRI method has five principles viz ., low seed rate, higher spacing, no water logging condition, 10-12 days old seedling transplanting and weed management.
The farmers are becoming aware of the importance of the method but still needs attention as they do not taken up separate seedbed preparation and hence not able to calculate cost of cultivation. The weed management is the main drawback as it is poor. The farmers are supported with 50% input costs and technical guidance by agricultural graduates to promote SRI method.
The farmers are making out the difference between the SRI & conventional methods. Some of the constraints the farmers are facing include high weed infestation, lack of availability of labors and problem of water availability.
Some recommendations were suggested by us which included selection of farmers from a cluster of villages and early selection of the beneficiaries.

I completed his degree in Agriculture from the College of Agriculture, Dharwad . After graduation, I worked as a Field Officer at the Agricultural Science Foundation in Hulkoti. Program areas included watershed development, organic farming and livelihood improvement.
Prior to DFP, I was involved in creating awareness among rural farmers on the importance of water and soil conservation in dry land farming. Specifically, mine work involved motivating farmers to adopt technology such as bunding, farm ponds, construction of waste weirs, etc. I also engaged in promoting sustainable agricultural practices through organic farming, and he helped to organize people into self-help and joint-liability groups for livelihood development.

A SUCEESS STORY OF A SMALL FARMER

I met a farmer named Shivappa Adargunchi who shared his success story. His story revealed that he had 2.5 acres of land under agriculture where he used to cultivate savi, jowar and maize before the intervention by BAIF. He was unable to meet the needs of his family by the income he earned from cultivation of land, so he used to work in other’s fields and also went for stone work. However, after the intervention by BAIF, he, with the help of BAIF, planted one acre of his land with sapota. He did not hire any labor. He also worked in others’ fields for four days apart from working in his own field for four days so as to support his family because he would not get any immediate returns. BAIF also helped him by paying Rs. 25 for the work he did in his own field. He planted 40 sapota and 1200 forest species and used pitcher irrigation, as water was unavailable. There was no income for the first four years, so he started vermicomposting and planted grass species. As his wife was in a self-help group, he took out a loan to purchase cows, which brought in more income. In the first year, he made a repayment of Rs. 14000. Now he is earning around Rs. 30000 from vermicomposting, Rs. 15000 from sale of earthworms and Rs. 3000 from sale of grass slips per annum.

There are some still-existing needs of the village that concern me.

— Encouraging farmers to produce more of vermicompost and making them use it in their own fields.

— Certifying all the farmers’ fields growing horticultural crops organically through one of the certifying agencies so that the farmers could get higher prices for their produce.
